
Petition Signing Guidance
To appear on Pennsylvania’s primary ballot, candidates must gather valid signatures from same-party voters.
The 2025 Petition Signing Periods is Feb. 18 – Mar. 11
KNOW YOUR CANDIDATES
If you are asked to sign a candidate’s petition, ask about their party registration.
Sign only petitions for registered Democrats.
CROSS-FILLING CANDIDATES — Be award of this exception, which occurs in Municipal Elections.
Candidates for County Common Pleas Judge, Magisterial District Judge, and School Director can cross-file and appear on both Democratic and Republican ballots if they collect enough signatures on separate petitions from each party.
CIRCULATORS of Democratic Petitions must be registered Democrats in the state of PA. Circulators of Republican Petitions must be registered Republicans in the state of PA. Circulators must complete the Statement of Circulator on the back of the petition after you have finished collecting signatures.
How to Sign a Petition

Guidance for Signing Candidate Petitions
Non-compliance with any of the instructions below could result in rejection of your signature or of the petition.
- Only sign petitions when the top section is completely filled out
- Sign in ink using the name that you used when registering to vote
- Do not use ditto marks on a petition
- You must be a registered Democrat
- You must live in the municipality or district of the position on the petition. CLICK HERE to find your municipality and district information in the “Voting Center Links.”
- You must provide you street address, not your mailing address
- You must list the municipality you live in for “City, Boro or Twp” block on the petition, not your mailing address. For example, you may have a Coplay mailing address, but your municipality is North Whitehall Township.
- The name you provide on a petition must match the name on your voter registration
- The number of petitions you can sign for a particular position depends on the number of openings. If there are four open spots, you may sign up to four petitions for that position..
